The history of the island of Rhodes, US

Colonial period

In 1638, Roger Williams after being eliminated from Massachusetts Bay decided that this would not be the end of him and he still wanted to pursue his beliefs in religion and therefore settled at Narragansett Bay which he called Providence. Some of the people that wanted to move towards religious freedom also followed him and settled around Narragansett Bay making their own establishments. The union of these towns established is what later made King Charles II in 1663 let them start a self government journey through the royal contract. Rhodes Island was therefore running as an independent government and even had the power to put restrictions to its territory.

Colonial relations

As a self governed city, Rhodes Island was to deal with the neighbors. Rodger Williams, the founder, was quite respected for his great ability to keep people in his territory closely knit together making them stronger. The peace did not last a long time and conflicts started leading to traumatic events for Rhodes Island.

Rhodes revolutionary journey

Being a British colony in America, Rhodes Island was the first to get its independence.

Rhodes Island flourished in industrialization; they were massively involved in the slave trade. Even though they made huge profits, they became one of the earliest colonies to banish the slave trade practice and label it illegal. From the labor the slaves provided, Rhodes became very widely known for their manufacturing skills in the textile industry from the cotton cultivated through the slave laborers.

Industrial revolution gradually expanded as the textile industries began to sprout in numerous places. The fact that they had machine tools that made jewelry and silverware, improved their state further making them become one of the highly industrialized cities. This industrial revolution brought with it more citizens who would come in search of employment. People came from countries like Great Britain.

The civil war and great depression

Rhodes Island was involved in the American civil war that led to the death of some of its soldiers. They provided arms to their army and collaborated with the chosen few. Due to their prowess in the industrial sector, they helped their people win their war by providing fighting materials. The large growth experienced enabled the people of Rhodes island get improved sanitation and better health.

After this war, Rhodes Island was in the front line to abolish racial segregation and by doing this it received massive amounts of immigrants that came from Germany and England due to the aftermath of the war.

In the 1920’s and 1930’s, Rhodes Island experienced a surge in Ku Klux Klan membership.

Rhodes Island has had the history of being democratic and this has been seen in their support of democrats who are to champion the rights of the people by prioritizing on issues that are crucial like education and good healthcare.

The history that Rhodes Island provides is too much and very interesting. Though it is a small state, it still is very rich in historical background.
